Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – King Salman International Airport (KSIA), a Public Investment Fund (PIF) company, has officially started construction on its third runway, marking a significant milestone in the airport’s expansion and operational readiness. This development underscores KSIA’s commitment to meeting long-term air traffic growth and enhancing efficiency.

The third runway is a critical element of the KSIA Master Plan, representing a major step forward in the airport’s transformation journey, according to a report by the Saudi Press Agency.

Strategic Design and Delivery

The project is being executed in partnership with FCC Construcción SA and Al-Mabani General Contractors Company. Designed to align with Riyadh’s prevailing wind patterns, the runway will ensure safe and efficient aircraft operations under all conditions. Spanning 4,200 meters, it will feature multiple access taxiways to optimize aircraft flow.

Capacity and Operational Impact

Currently, KSIA handles 65 aircraft movements per hour. With the addition of the third runway and operational enhancements, this figure is expected to rise to 85 movements per hour, significantly improving efficiency and supporting future growth.

Leadership Perspective

Marco Mejia, Acting CEO of KSIA, stated:

“The launch of construction for the third runway is a pivotal step in delivering the KSIA Master Plan. It reflects our commitment to building world-class infrastructure that supports future growth, enhances operational efficiency, and expands long-haul connectivity without limitations.”

A Visionary National Project

King Salman International Airport is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s ambition to position Riyadh as a global capital and leading aviation hub. Announced by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, the project plays a vital role in achieving the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.

Located on the existing King Khalid International Airport site, KSIA will integrate current terminals with three new ones, alongside residential and leisure facilities, six runways, and logistics hubs. Covering 57 sq km, the airport aims to accommodate 100 million passengers annually and handle over two million tons of cargo by 2030.

This phase of development strengthens KSIA’s international flight network, reinforcing Riyadh’s status as a globally connected aviation gateway and advancing national goals within the air transport sector.
